This list originally appeared in Mycotaxon (62: 247-288. 1997). It is updated irregularly, with the most recent addition being 01/30/2000. Erroneous information encounted in any entry below should be brought to our attention. New information on unlisted types is welcomed.

INTRODUCTION. In 1872, four years after the University of California was founded, a natural history museum was established, which included a small herbarium of vascular plants. The first 12 fungi were deposited in 1892 by Walter C. Blasdale (Cryptogamic Botany assistant), followed by 25 fungi from Thomas J. Burrill, Champaign, Illinois, in 1892 and 94 lichens from Clara E. Cummings, Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1893. Later acquisitions accumulated gradually with the addition of various specimens sent to the University as gifts or exchange. Currently, the mycological herbarium consists of approximately 170,000 accessioned specimens and several nearly intact exsiccatae including Fries's Scleromyceti Sueciae (Decades 1-30, 1819-1822), Krieger's Fungi Saxonici Exsiccati, and Ellis's & Everhart's Fungi Columbiani, Cent. 1-50 (15-50 distributed by Elam Bartholomew). As a result of an intensive exchange program, the holdings also include a large number of northern European microfungi, specimens received from Franz Petrak (European and exotic), and South American and Mexican microfungi (especially Uredinales from the Edward W. D. Holway collection, University of Minnesota). There are also large numbers of Philippine fungi received from Mary S. Clemens, Elmer D. Merrill, and Henry S. Yates.

Major collectors of Californian fungi deposited at UC include Walter C. Blasdale, Lee Bonar, William Bridge Cooke, Nathaniel L. Gardner, Thomas T. McCabe, Vera P. Mentzer Miller, Elizabeth E. Morse, Harold E. Parks, Clarence R. Quick, William A. Setchell, and Joseph P. Tracy. An index to Californian fungi and host plants was established by Lee Bonar and has been maintained by staff members in a card file, in loose-leaf notebooks, and to a limited extent in computerized records. Major collectors of Californian lichens in the holdings include Albert W. C. T. Herre, Isabelle Tavares, William A. Weber, and T. Elliot Weier.

Many of the holotypes were deposited in the herbarium by Lee Bonar, Helen M. Gilkey, Elizabeth E. Morse, and William A. Setchell, as well as by Edward E. Butler, Donald G. Cooney, Ralph Emerson, and Annette W. Ramaley. A number of the isotypes were received as gifts or exchange from Richard K. Benjamin, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden; Henry C. Greene, University of Wisconsin; Donald T. Kowalski, Chico State University; and William A. Weber, University of Colorado. Other sources of isotypes included the fungal collections of Harold E. Parks and Walter C. Blasdale's herbarium of Uredinales, both of which were deposited in UC.

Although a number of important specimens are in the holdings, the fungal collections have not been used extensively or recognized adequately because UC has not always had an active systematic mycology program. To facilitate taxonomic research, a list of type specimens housed at UC with references to the appropriate literature is presented here.

Taxa are arranged alphabetically, with nomenclatural synonyms and illegitimate homonyms, etc., added as cross-references to facilitate the use of the list. Following the basionym are the original reference, type status, UC accession number, and collection data, together with pertinent notes. Only the county and state are indicated for collections from the United States; for other countries, states, provinces, districts, and some counties have been added when not in the protologue. In a few instances, the collector is not indicated and the date is not given. A list of abbreviations used throughout this list is provided following this introduction.

Acronyms used for herbaria are from Holmgren et al., 1990, or are explained here. Brummitt and Powell, 1992, were consulted for the abbreviation of the names of authors; Lawrence et al., 1968, and Bridson and Smith, 1991, were used for journal abbreviations. See also Greuter, 1988.

The following taxa are lectotypified here: Comatricha anastomosans Kowalski (CHSC), Diacheopsis effusa Kowalski (UC), Diacheopsis serpula Kowalski (CHSC), Didymium disciforme Kowalski & T. N. Lakh. (CHSC), Elasmomyces russuloides Setch. UC, Exosporina fawcettii E. E. Wilson (UC), Gloeosporium limetticola R. E. Clausen (UC), Guignardia alaskana M. Reed (UC), Guignardia irritans Setch. & Estee (UC), Lepidoderma aggregatum Kowalski (CHSC), Lepidoderma didermoides Kowalski (CHSC), Licea deplanata Kowalski (CHSC), Licea hepatica Kowalski (CHSC), Omphalia tralucida Bliss (UC), Phyllosticta lupini Bonar (UC), Squamuloderma nullifila Kowalski (UC), Synchytrium variabilum Karling (UC), Tracya lemnae (Setch.) Syd. & P. Syd. (UC), and Trichia synsporum Kowalski & E. L. McNichols (CHSC).

LECTOTYPE UC 221826. Under Quercus agrifolia Nee, Univ. of California campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., California, N. L. Gardner 220, 24.xi.1904. Evidently a mixed collection; mistakenly placed in synonymy with Arcangeliella alveolata (Cooke & Massee) Zeller & C. W. Dodge, Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 22:365. 1935, on the basis of a portion of Gardner 220 in the Lloyd Herbarium (as stated, Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 23:621. 1936). A portion of UC 221826 was sent for Setchell by Bonar 31.i.1937 to Zeller, together with some notes from the notebook of Setchell & Gardner; Zeller [Mycologia 31:15. 1939] stated that he had received a portion of the type from Setchell and mistakenly assumed that it had been collected by Setchell on 29:iv:1905. Presumably this was the same portion referred to by Singer and Smith [Mem. Torrey Bot. Club 21(3):61. 1960] in statement "type examined," Setchell 220. Because Zeller accepted the specimen sent in 1937 as a portion of the type, we are hereby listing UC 221826 as lectotype.
  138. Endomyces geotrichum E. E. Butler & L. J. Petersen
Mycologia 64:367. 1972. HOLOTYPE UC 1446904. This packet might be more appropriately designated the lectotype, judging from a notation with Parks 441 at FH kindly sent by Emily W.
